Comparative Statics and Non-expected Utility Preferences*
نویسنده
چکیده
Researchers have shown that many, though not all, of the basic results of expected utility analysis can be more or less directly generalized to non-expected utility preferences. This paper describes the essential difference between results which can be extended in this manner and those which cannot and shows that an important family of comparative statics theorems falls into the former class. Expected Utility and Risk Aversion
This reading describes how people’s aversion to risk affects the decisions they make about investment. Basically, the concepts used to do this analysis emerge naturally when people have expected utility preferences, but not otherwise. So, it illustrates one important way that expected utility is applied. This analysis also makes it possible to illustrate how to do comparative statics. Comparati...
متن کاملPreferences estimation without approximation
We devise an estimation methodology which allows preferences estimation and comparative statics analysis without a reliance on Taylor’s approximations and the indirect utility function.
متن کاملGreater mutual aggravation∗
A large strand of research has identified conditions on preferences under which (i) a single risk is undesirable and (ii) two independent risks aggravate each other. We extend this line of inquiry by establishing conditions such that (iii) the degree of mutual aggravation is greater for more severe risks. Here, the severity of risks is characterized by means of general stochastic dominance shif...
متن کاملUncertainty and Risk in Financial Markets∗
This paper considers a general equilibrium model in which the distinction between uncertainty and risk is formalized by assuming agents have incomplete preferences over statecontingent consumption bundles, as in Bewley (1986). Without completeness, individual decision making depends on a set of probability distributions over the state space. A bundle is preferred to another if and only if it ha...
متن کاملIncomplete preferences, complementarity and non-convexity
This paper extends to incomplete preferences the formulation of strategic complementarity in Milgrom and Shannon (1994). It is shown, by example, that quasi-supermodularity and single-crossing no longer su¢ce to guarantee monotone comparative statics with incomplete preferences. However, when incomplete preferences satisfy monotone closure in addition to quasi-supermodularity and single-crossin...
